| I finally got on the ball and changed the colors to something more appropriate for spring. Yes, I realize the background image can be a bit much, but it's fresh and springy and I'll probably change it after this month.  I created an online quiz on phonetic symbols so I could practice for my ENG478 class. You can try it if you want. The first several are easy because the phonetic symbol pretty much matches the letter most commonly used for the sound, but then when you get into "th" sounds, there are special symbols with special names.
Also, since it finally warmed up some, I went for a walk and took some pictures. The first one is from before I left the house and is of my cat in one of his favorite perches. The second one, the gravel mound, is from the parking area I share with my neighbors. Parking is at a premium in the Oregon District, and I'm not only lucky enough to have a garage but also to have some additional off-street parking, which was in dire need of some additional gravel. The other pictures are signs of spring throughout the neighborhood, although the last one is from in front of my house and shows the empty beer can that someone very kindly left me. Better than a couch, I guess.

  If you've ever visited Wright State University in the middle of a school day you've probably seen one of these. Yes, it's a parking stalker. Student spaces are at a premium, and most students, instead of parking in remote lots and walking or shuttling back to campus, seek out spots closer in, even if it means they have to wait in their cars and follow people around in the hopes of taking their spots.
 People have complained about parking for years and the issue will probably never be resolved to everyone's satisfaction. Yet, look at the other pictures here. I took these pictures in lot 16, not in the center of campus but out by the Fred White Health Center. Do you see what I saw? Yes, there are faculty/staff spots sitting empty.
Now I wouldn't want Kim Goldenberg's job as president of Wright State or even Rob Kretzer's job as director of parking and transportation services. I realize they have more stress than I'd care to have. But it seems like a simple thing to reduce the size of the empty gated section of lot 16 by moving a few concrete blocks and repainting some parking spaces. It wouldn't make all commuter students happy, but it would help some of us. Why should we have to see faculty/staff spaces going unused?    |

If you've ever looked at my groups page, you know that I'm a facilitator for the Dayton Dialogue on Race Relations. This evening was the monthly facilitators' in-service meeting, and I learned about some upcoming groups that are open to the public.
What's a group? It's six to twelve people who agree to meet for six two-hour sessions to talk about black/white race relations in our country and in Dayton, to learn about what each other has experienced and, most importantly, to work together to develop action plans to make things better. If you know that race relations are a problem in Dayton but have felt like nothing could be done about it, this is a chance for you to see how to make a difference. If you're skeptical about whether there's a problem but are open minded and willing to listen, here's a chance to voice your doubts and hear other people's perspectives. The traditional model has been for these groups to meet in individual homes over a six-week period. However, sometimes DDRR offers condensed models, doing two sessions per day either three days in a row or one day a week over three weeks. If you're interested in the traditional model, either hosting a group in your home or attending another group, call the number below. Or if you're interested in one of the groups below, also call the number below (it's important to call to say you're coming so that enough facilitators and materials will be available).
