My Grafton Hill webcam is now online.

John Lewis, one of "three wise men" Senator McCain has said he would consult as president, recently reproved Senator McCain for his and Governor Palin's personal attacks on Senator Obama, warning McCain that he could be inciting his supporters to violence.

And so does Senator McCain heed the words of "a man [he's] always admired," someone whom McCain said could "teach us all a lot about the meaning of courage and commitment to causes greater than our self-interest"?

No, instead Senator McCain "call[s] on Senator Obama to immediately and personally repudiate these outrageous and divisive comments that are so clearly designed to shut down debate."

In my book that makes McCain a hypocrite, and I've written a letter to tell him so (for all the good that will do).

Senator John McCain
241 Russell Senate Office Building
Washington, DC 20510

Dear Senator McCain:

You are a hypocrite.

You “call on Senator Obama to immediately and personally repudiate [John Lewis’s] outrageous and divisive comments” and yet you yourself, along with the running mate you’ve chosen, make outrageous and divisive comments about Senator Obama’s character, and, until very recently, stand idly by when your supporters shout out cries of “Terrorist!” and “Kill him!” in reference to Senator Obama.

You speak against the “shut[ting] down of debate” and you’ve spoken against “negative attack ads,” yet all you’ve done lately is to shut down debate by attacking not Senator Obama’s policies but rather his honor and patriotism.

And has making these personal attacks benefited you? Only if you think given up your own honor, throwing away your good reputation of having sacrificed for our country, and sullying your good name have been worthwhile.

If in fact you do still care about your own honor and reputation, the way to start to restore them now is not to get Senator Obama to repudiate John Lewis, a man whose advice you yourself have said you would value, but instead to heed John Lewis’s words and indeed to heed your own words. Stop making personal attacks, get Governor Palin to stop making them, and instead talk about the issues.

Stop being a hypocrite.

Sincerely,
David C. Lauri Jr.
