What I'm reading *

I've always read. While growing up, reading was a refuge when I found life too unpleasant or stressful. Consequently I've bought a lot of books over time as well.

 
Now that I'm no longer in the rich corporate phase of my life I've rediscovered the library. Dayton's library may be maligned by some but is still a great resource. One type of book I like to read is gay fiction and I was surprised to see a lot of it in the Dayton library's catalog. Plus you can even ask them to buy particular titles, and they will!

  Agatha Christie met her second husband, archaeologist Max Mallowan, in Iraq and spent much time with him in the Middle East. With this book Christie gives a fun glimpse into post-WWII Iraq, then still in the sterling zone and part of Britain's waning sphere of influence. The names of the places mentioned in the book will sound familiar to modern viewers of CNN, but what the book's heroine, Victoria Jones, sees probably doesn't exist anymore.

  Written in 1931 and set in the snowy moors of Devonshire, England, this book is from fairly early in Agatha Christie's career. Growing up I was a big fan of Christie's, and I'm just old enough to remember anticipating the posthumous release of her final Poirot and Miss Marple mysteries. I came across The Sittaford Mystery on a newsgroup, and although I had probably already read it, since growing up I read just about everything Christie wrote, I didn't really remember it. Sittaford features none of Christie's famous characters (not Poirot or Miss Marple or even Tommy and Tuppence) which is perhaps what makes it a refreshing novel to choose when one wants to sit down and spend an evening in front of the fire with Christie after a long absence from her.
