MAP of DAYTON, OHIOI made a fun purchase on eBay recently, namely this cool atlas of the Dayton area from 1945, published by Frederick J. Cellarius, Civil Engineer.Of course a lot's changed in the area since 1945, which was before the Interstate Highway System, so this map doesn't show I-75 tearing through the center of town built practically right atop the Great Miami River, nor does it show U.S. Route 35 ripping through east and west Dayton. Also, there are only three municipalities — the city of Dayton, the city of Oakwood, and the village of Riverside (Moraine City was not, in fact, a city in 1945, becoming one only later, after seceding from the new city of Kettering in the 1950s). Lots of interesting place names, some of which, like Beavertown or Northridge, most people still know about, and others, like Berkley Heights or Stillwater Junction, which I doubt many people could place today. I had to cut the map up in order to get it through my scanner, so pieces below don't all match up. Sorry about that, but I figured it was more fun to be able to share the map online (and to look at it on my computer) than it was to preserve the integrity of the original. You can click on a piece of the map to zoom in to a higher resolution image, or you can take a look at the entire map in higher resolution (or just download a PDF of the whole map). The street directory is also available online or in PDF format. |
