I-75 and N Main reconstruction:   July 12, 2002  April 26, 2003  DDRR facilitators workshop 02-24-07  February 14, 2009  August 6, 2009  October 25, 2009

Living on Grafton Hill and working near downtown off North Main I drive by the reconstruction just about every day. This evening the weather was nice, so I took a walk along Grand to Great Miami Boulevard to Main and took some pictures of the changes. As you can see, Grand Avenue no longer has access to I-75. Along the top of I-75 are fancy glass sound barriers designed so that passing motorists can still see the Art Institute and Masonic Temple. Main Street is being widened and completely rebuilt.

You can also see evidence of traffic accidents and tragedies. The building that was Suttmiller’s Supper Club and later the gay bar Celebrity suffered a direct hit, and concrete barriers get scraped and cracked. The evidence of tragedies are the sad memorials consisting of weather-worn stuffed animals tied to light poles and of messages scrawled in permanent marker on utility boxes and signs.

The “Road Closed Ahead” sign on Grand isn’t quite true.
